Early Humans

Hello everyone,

I had fun researching about Early Humans. This information is all new to me so, again, I couldn't stop reading about it from several sources. I hope you also enjoy my findings below.

How far back does the human species go?

Based on the illustration of recent fossil discoveries below, posted in January 11, 2019, contributor John Rafferty, human species goes back at least 4 million years ago. It demonstrates the evolution of Australopithecus and Hominin. Note that for nearly 1 million years, some members of Australopithecus and Homo overlapped in time with one another.

Was Australopithecus a species of human?

Australopithecus afarensis was a species of human capable of walking upright but only adapted to travel short distances on the ground. Studies done on hominid fossils found in sub-Sahara, Africa, shows evidence that they lived from 3.8 to 2.9 million years ago and hominid fossils have been found in sub-Sahara, Africa.

Was Homo Erectus a species of human?

Homo erectus was a species of human and taller than earlier human ancestors, writes Joseph Castro his livescience.com article: “Homo Erectus: Facts About the ‘Upright Man’.” He also states that “one of the most complete fossil skeletons ever found, a 1.5-million-year-old specimen of an adolescent make known as Turkana Boy (now known as Nariokotome Boy), may have grown up to 6 feet 1 inches.”

Compare Homo Erectus and Homo Sapiens in terms of the range and duration of their presence on the planet Earth.

Homo erectus:

Range: lived in Northern, Eastern, and Southern Africa; Western Asia (Dmanisi, Republic of Georgia); East Asia (China and Indonesia)

Duration: lived between about 1.89 million and 110,000 years ago.

Homo sapiens:

Range: evolved in Africa, now worldwide.

Duration: lived about 300,000 years ago to present.
